Philippine Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona will address about 1,000 nutrition workers in the Visayas who will be gathering in Cebu for the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) Convention starting November 10 to 11 at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in Mandaue City.
Secretary Ona, who is at the same time the chairman of the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Governing Board, will deliver the keynote speech at the opening of the convention focusing on the “One Nutrition, One Nation” movement.
Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia, who heads the Provincial Nutrition Committee, is delivering the welcome address.
The BNS are community-based volunteer nutrition workers who deliver basic nutrition services and render assistance in the delivery of health, social protection, and other interventions to families in the barangay level.
In line with the Accelerated Hunger Mitigation Program (AHMP) of the Department of Health, the convention aims to further promote good nutrition in the country.
Specifically, the convention will provide the participants with updates on hunger-mitigation efforts and priority actions for nutrition improvement contained in the Medium-Term Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition. The convention will also serve as venue for BNS to organize associations or federations and come up with unified and concerted community-level efforts to address hunger and malnutrition in the Philippines.
Organized by the National Nutrition Council under the Department of Health (DOH), the two-day convention is the second of the three nationwide events aimed at empowering over 25,000 BNS spread across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
