“I write about topics I’m passionate about. I believe every one of us can do something to improve our current situation, no matter how small. When my readers share their opinion, question the status quo or act on an issue, I feel that I have done my share in nation building,” said Gladys Reyes, 2015 Globe Media Excellence Awards Blogger of the Year and Social Media Advocate, on her inspiration when writing and choosing a subject matter to work on.

Reyes started blogging way back 2004 and focused on promoting Negros Occidental’s tourism four years later. She joined a group of bird watching enthusiasts and through readings, lectures, visits around the province, and interviews with scientists and locals, in which she came to realize that the natural beauty of Negros Island we see today is a far cry from what it was decades ago. Her blog entitled “Vanishing Treasures of Negros” won her the said awards in the Digital category. Writing about various issues concerning Negros Occidental allows her to inform and engage her readers.

“I’m glad Globe extended the GMEA to include other key cities in Visayas and Mindanao so that other local issues may reach a bigger audience and raise awareness in other regions. Receiving my awards as Blogger of the Year and Social Media Advocate of the Year was something I could only hope for but never imagined becoming a reality”, Reyes added.

GMEA poses a challenge to the media community by creating inspirational and socially-relevant stories. Furthermore, she said that the more journalists and bloggers pushing for change would mean more social issues that can be addressed.
