Red Cross donations via GCash urged; cell sites converted into free charging centers

Leading telecommunications company Globe Telecom employee-volunteers conduct relief operations in the municipalities of Loboc, Maribojoc, and Loon in Bohol, benefitting some 200 families in each area.

The three municipalities are among the areas hardest hit by the earthquake which struck Central Visayas in the morning of October 15, 2013. The quake also hit Cebu island.

Maribojoc and Loon even became isolated due to damaged bridges. Relief packs consisting of food and water were turned over to the local government unit of Maribojoc and the Department of Social Welfare and Development for Loon.

At the same time, Globe provided prepaid load to the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO) of the Department of Education to help them monitor the effects of the earthquake.

Residents of Sagbayan, Bohol camp outside a Globe cell site while waiting for their mobile phones to finish charging.

The company, likewise, encourages its subscribers to donate to the Red Cross via GCash electronic wallet.

To help, Globe subscribers can simply dial *143# in their mobile phone and select GCash; Select Others then Donate; Enter the amount, 4-digit MPIN, and select Red Cross.

Meanwhile, Globe Telecom opened its cell site facilities to Bohol residents to help them charge their mobile phones while waiting for power to be restored in their respective areas.

Unmindful of the heat, thankful residents quickly trooped to the cell sites nearest them to avail of the Libreng Charging service.  The eight cell sites which Globe opened to the public are:  Loon RSU, Loon Road, Sagbayan, Clarin, Bilar, Inabangga Luyo, Inabangga Sto. Rosario, and Carmen.

Globe security personnel and caretakers manned the facilities which are being powered by heavy-duty generator sets. Several towns in Bohol suffered from power outage as a result of the devastating magnitude-7.2 earthquake. Without electricity, the residents were practically cut off from their friends and relatives since they could not use their cellular phones which are their main means of communication.
