A ‘Hunger Caravan’ highlighted the launch of the 39th celebration of Nutrition Month that sought to focus attention on addressing hunger in Cebu City last July 1.
The day’s series of activities began after lunch with a Holy Mass at the San Pedro Calungsod Chapel, SRP, Cebu City. After the mass, the ‘Hunger Caravan’ commenced at the Mambaling Sports Complex, Gotchan, Mambaling, Cebu City where government agencies including the DOH-NNC, DA, DSWD and TESDA shared with Pantawid beneficiaries some actions to address hunger and malnutrition.
From Mambaling, the contingent passed through N. Bacalso Avenue to P. del Rosario Street to Imus Avenue to General Maxilom Avenue to Gorordo Avenue to Ayala Road to Cardinal Rosales Avenue to Mindanao Avenue and finally enter Ayala Center Cebu.
The caravan, said National Nutrition Council (NNC) 7 Director Dr. Parolita A. Mission, was done to call the attention of the public on the issue on hunger.
With this year’s theme “Gutom at malnutrisyon, sama-sama nating wakasan!” the month-long celebration seeks to raise awareness on the need for more action in addressing hunger, Mission pointed out.
She said this is part of the Philippine commitment to the United Nations MDG Goal 1 which is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
During the formal Launching Program at the Terraces, Ayala Center Cebu at 5:00pm, the assembly witnessed the ceremonial unveiling of the campaign to end hunger and malnutrition will happen.
Capping the day long activities was “Zumba, a stride for good health and end hunger and malnutrition” at 6:00pm. The Zumba is done to call the attention of the zumba enthusiasts and the public on the issue on hunger and promote healthy lifestyle.
The activities are to done increase awareness on hunger issues and actions to mitigate hunger and malnutrition, encourage stakeholders to contribute to addressing hunger issues and advocate for stronger political action to end hunger.
With these activities, NNC 7 is hoping that more citizens would take active action against hunger.
