“Focus on what you want and be passionate about what you do. Ultimately, love your work,” said 2015 Globe Media Excellence Awards Reporter of the Year for Radio to all aspiring broadcast media practitioners.
Capistrano’s winning entry entitled “kangitngit sa kinabuhi, dili babag aron makab-ot ang matam-is nga kabag-ohan” is close to her heart. According to her, it’s a story inspired from a friend’s dark and painful journey to change, who got a second chance at a life with a help from a foundation here in Cebu. “Out of the six entries that I submitted, it was my last one. I was so nervous and I really did not expect to win”, she said. She loves to do in-depth stories because it serves as an eye-opener to the readers about the harsh reality of life.
Empathizing with other people has always been Capistrano’s personal advocacy. Since college, she donates food and school supplies to less fortunate kids. She says that no amount of money can pay for happiness that comes from helping other people.
“I am not pressured to win this year but rather I am pushed to find good stories”, Capistrano added as entries are pouring in for GMEA 2016. Also, she believes that winning GMEA 2015 has proven that even simple but good stories have the power to affect other people.
