Barangay Lawaan was awarded as Most Outstanding Barangay for Kalambuan last May 27 during the Balay Mindanaw Awards 2016.
The Kalambuan Award was given to the barangay that showed outstanding initiatives in addressing poverty towards sustainability and viability. The finalists in this category were Barangays Gusa and Lumbia of Cagayan de Oro City; Barangay Lawaan of Gingoog City; and Barangay New Panay of Aleosan, North Cotabato.
Since residents of Barangay Lawaan are dependent on agri-based livelihood such as broom making, banana plantations and rice production, the barangay’s initiative entitled “Poverty Alleviation Through the Establishment of Community Based Enterprises (Backyard Broiler Production Project – BBPP)” is focused on transforming rural families to become enterprising households and continually searching for viable income generating business ventures. The creation of Lawaan Multi-Purpose Cooperative (LAMPCO) helps in sustaining this project.
BBPP is a product of Barangay Development Planning through Participatory Resource Appraisal. This not only aims to help the residents increase their income through broiler operations but also address exiting issues in the barangay such as malnutrition. Hence, they organized and conduct regular feeding program for the school kids in the community that is joined even by non-broiler growers.
