Barangay Tawagan was awarded as Most Outstanding Barangay for Kalig-on last May 27 during the Balay Mindanaw Awards 2016.
The Kalig-on Award was given to the barangay that has developed and institutionalized resiliency and preparedness in facing disasters. There were 8 finalists for this category namely Barangays Pinamihagan and Marita of President Roxas, Capiz; Barangays Tawagan and Mat-e of Cagwait, Surigao del Sur; Barangays Carmen and Macasandig of Cagayan de Oro City; Barangay Manipulon of Estancia, Iloilo; and Barangay Ban-ao of Baganga, Davao Oriental.
For the past 16 years, the coastal community Barangay Tawagan has borne the brunt of different natural disasters such as typhoon, landslide and heavy rains. This caused not only physical damage to the barangay but also affected the social, economic and environmental life of the community. With the barangay located in a danger zone, their initiative entitled “Community Preparedness and Mitigation towards Resiliency” highlights the barangay’s programs and projects in the 4 thematic areas of DRR such as preparedness, emergency response, prevention and mitigation, and reconstruction and rehabilitation. Concrete projects of the barangay include evacuation centers, sea dike protection, resilient bridge, level 2 water system, water hydrants, improvement of drainage and installation of box culvert, and many others.
Because of active participation and strong leadership as well as great efforts and cleanliness of the constituents of Barangay Tawagan, they won the award as “Best Barangay on Good Health Practices” under Rural Areas Category, Regional and National levels.
