Barangay Pagangan was awarded Most Outstanding Barangay for Kalinaw Category last May 27 during the Balay Mindanaw Awards 2016.
The Kalinaw Award was given to the Most Outstanding Barangay with communities that have shown outstanding local initiatives in transforming violent conflicts and build peace. Barangay Pagangan was given this award for their initiative in “Strengthened Muslim-Christian Relationship – Key to Community’s Resiliency in Violent Conflicts” Aside from Barangay Diatagon (that was given a special award), the other finalists for this category included Barangay Mahayahay of Sultan Naga Dimaporo, Lanao del Norte, Barangay Tuburan of Cagayan de Oro City, and Barangay Dunguan also of Aleosan, North Cotabto.
Barangay Pagangan has been severely affected several times due to violent situations brought about by the conflict between GPH & MILF.
Now however, the Barangay Council and Ustadz avow they can always attempt to prevent clashes if its only happening within the barangay. They are always in consulation with the community, especially with the elders, on issues and concerns of the barangay, particularly if there are rumors of imminent violence. ‘Hisgutanay sa Barangay’ that is regularly conducted sustains the respectful relationship between Muslims and Christians as they discuss issues affecting the communities. The barangay has established dialog as peace mechanism and people participate and have good relationship despite differences in culture and religion.
