Miss Cebu 2014 Cheriemel Diane Muego knew her edge.
She sharpened this further the night before by discussing possible questions and her answers via Facebook the night before with UP Cebu school mates. She’s a political science major, an active member of the militant Nagkahiusang Kusug sa Estudyante (NKE), and a councilor of the UP Cebu Student Council.
Diane impressed the judges and the audience with her well-thought out answer to the first question-and-answer round.
Asked about her thoughts on calls for an independent Cebu, Diane spelled out politico-economic reasons arguing why she disagreed. For other pageant candidates, the question sounds difficult. But Diane’s political science friends later said she was fortunate. The topic was discussed in class semesters before.
Democracy icon and socialist
Diane cites democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar and socialist Bhagat Singh of India among her inspirations.
Victory to an argument with a feminist UP professor
A classmate said Miss Cebu 2014 Cheriemel Diane Muego once figured in an argument with a feminist political science professor. The professor declared in class that beauty pageants degrade women. Diane, who was already Miss UP-Cebu at that time, argued otherwise. Winning the Miss Cebu 2014 crown should also be a victory of sorts to that argument.
20th Birthday
Diane celebrated her 20th birthday days before the final pageant night.
Veteran
Diane is not exactly a newcomer in beauty pageants. She was Binibining Ormoc last year and and Miss UP Cebu 2013 first runner-up.
Model-like qualities
Miss Cebu 2014 1st Runner-Up Eva Psychee Patalingjug, however, had the more model-like quality as she walks and moves on stage. She won several special and minor prizes like “Miss Friendship,” “Best in Gown,” and “Miss Photogenic.”
Together we can make things happen
Eva also knows how to wow the crowd with her answers. She brought the house down when her answer to the judges question ended with the familiar line, “Together we can make things happen.”
Super typhoon Yolanda
A question about hope in the Yolanda aftermath was something expected. Eva could have deliberately prepared to use the mayor’s slogan. After all, as a Patalinjug, Eva herself hails from a political clan.
High fives
Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama who sat at the front row was visibly elated by Eva’s use of his administration’s slogan. He was seen exchanging several high-fives with Vice Mayor Edgar Labella who sat beside him.
