(UPDATE) Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has instructed Education Sec. Leonor Magtolis Briones that the opening of schoolyear 2020-2021 has been reset to Oct. 5, 2020, instead of today, Aug. 14, 2020.
This was contained in a memorandum signed by Executive Secretary Salvador C. Medialdea today (Aug. 14, 2020) in behalf of President Duterte. The decision was done as recommended by the Department of Education (DepEd).
According to the memorandum, the DepEd has been “instructed to ensure that all preparations has been made for the smooth and successful virtual opening of classes for academic year 2020-2021.
Briones hails World Vision’s “Abutin Na10.”
Philippine Education Sec. Leonor Magtolis Briones of the Department of Education (DepEd) has commended World Vision Philippines for ‘Abutin Na10,” a project to continue education under the New Normal.
Secretary Briones attended the virtual launch of this educational fund drive last June 30. It aims finance the reproduction of self-learning materials and gadgets to help thousands of students face the new school year amid the Covid-19 crisis.
“Education must continue,” said the education chief with or without the threat of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Education “is perhaps the greatest legacy we can leave our learners and our children,” she said. The Abutin Na10 campaign should enable distance learning and home schooling.
World Vision assistance to DepEd lauded

The “Abutin Na10” campaign hopes to bridge a gap by enabling distance learning and homeschooling modalities.
“>A global organization, World Vision International has focused on the most vulnerable people in 17 countries. It particularly engages in the prevention of transmission, supporting health responses, and caring for children made vulnerable by this crisis.
In the Philippines, the NGO’s National Director Rommel V. Fuerte pointed out how the country has been coping from succeeding emergencies in the past months.
“Thousands of people are still reeling from the impact of the multiple earthquakes in Cotabato, volcanic eruption in Taal and typhoon in Bicol. In Marawi and other fragile areas of the country, thousands of children are still displaced. We also remember the children living in poor and highly urbanized areas who are most vulnerable in these times,” Fuerte shared.“World Vision lauds the coming together of different stakeholders to combat fear and the further spread of the virus. We continue to pray that we will get through this as a country and as a global community,” he added.
